ny crystrel build

March 31st to April 11th 2005 saw us play in New York for the first time. Although we played fourteen gigs in that time there was lots of spare time to have some fun. Shooglenifty were also performing at the events so some over indulgence was always on the cards. We were there to promote Scotland as part of Tartan Week.

Pictured here is the world famous Chrysler Building which was about two blocks from our hotel.

We were lead to believe that everything in New York was bigger. How wrong we were. Check out this picture of the hotel gardener cutting the lawn. Iain's granny who lived on a third floor tenement flat had a bigger garden than that. No wonder we didn't see any sheep. (Much to Seamus's disappointment). ny lawn
ny session As ever, everywhere we go we look to spend time off playing tunes and having a couple of pints at sessions. With Shooglenifty with us, we had a couple of great nights entertaining ourselves and anybody else who wished to listen in local bars.
Due to a terrible misunderstanding at Glasgow Airport we were unable to take our laundry staff with us on this tour. The result can be witnessed in this picture of the unfortunate Adam who had to iron his own trousers. ny adam iron
ny innis stoop This picture is dedicated to David Town, our sound engineer. He is the inventor of the international sign of weakening as displayed here by Innes. We arrived at the St Andrews bar to find the smallest p.a. in the smallest venue we have played in years. Despite initial concerns we had a great night in a very intimate atmosphere.

The next night we played at Tavern on the Green in Central Park. It is reputed to be the most profitable restaurant in the world. The event was called Whisky Live and much to our dismay there was lots of great food and  hundreds of malt whisky's to be sampled. We did our best to leave out as few as possible in the interest of fairness.

Shooglenifty also played at this one and Iain joined in on percussion in a futile attempt to avoid the whisky frenzy.

ny sea pizza Tom could not make this tour so we took Seamus again to play the guitar. Following on from his massive burger pics from the Australian tour, this pic shows the ever expanding Seamus tucking in to what he tried to convince us was the smallest pizza available. Please keep your eyes open for further 'Seamus eating' pics in future galleries.
Probably our favorite gig of the tour was in Fitzpatrick's on 44th Street. Again it was a very small venue but the atmosphere was fantastic. We were impressed to hear that we kept people awake on the eight floor. ny fitz band
ny fitz crowd This is a picture of part of the audience at the Fitzpatrick gig. There were some Skye folk in the crowd including Martin MacKinnon from Sleat (in the middle of the picture with the daft hat). Martin earns his living walking the dogs of rich people in Manhattan although judging by the nick of him by the end of the night, the dogs would have been walking him the next morning.
This is a picture of the Peatbogs and Shooglenifty on the bus leaving our hotel and heading for the airport on our way home. It sure was fun being on tour with the Shoogles and it looks as if we will be playing a few times with them this year so look out for some major sessions and some possible collaborations.   ny bus bye
